How to Measure a Washer

There are a few things to consider when choosing a washer including the material, load capacity, finish, and more importantly, the size. If you need to know how to measure the inner diameter, outer diameter, and thickness of a washer, this guide is for you.

Using a Caliper for Precise Measurement

To get the most precise measurement for your washer, we recommend using an electronic digital caliper. Using a caliper allows for accurate measurement for both the washer’s inner/outer diameter and its thickness. Normally, calipers have two jaws that take inner and outer measurements. The small jaw is used for inner measurements, and the large jaw is for outer measurements.

How to Measure the Inside Diameter of a Washer

Use the smaller jaw on the caliper to measure the inside diameter of the washer. To start, you want to close the caliper. Then, slowly open the caliper using the thumbscrew until both jaws make firm contact with the washer. Write down the measurement that appears on the screen.

How to Measure the Outside Diameter and Thickness of a Washer

Now you will use the larger jaws to measure the outside diameter. To measure the outside diameter of the washer, first, close the calipers. You should slowly open the calipers and place the jaws around the washer. Next, use the thumbscrew on the caliper and close the jaws. They should be firmly placed on the washer. Write down the measurement that appears on the screen. You will use the same method to measure the thickness of the washer by tightly closing the larger jaws on the washer once more.
